When games change their ID, they can choose an option to have their old name appear next to their new one.
Finally, after months of hints and rumors, Sony has officially announced that the option to change your PSN Online ID is now being tested and will roll out to all PlayStation users in "early 2019" (with earlier testing for members of the PlayStation Preview Program). Sony will allow you to display both IDs at the same time so your friends will know you made a change and don't get confused. PlayStation is making it clear not all PS4, PS3, and PS Vita games are guaranteed to support the feature, so users might see issues or errors in certain games. Sony states that this feature will be compatible with games published after April 1, 2018, and only some of the most-played PS4 games before this date. If gamers run into an issue with their new ID, they can revert back to their old one once during the beta testing. Sony will provide a list of supported ID change games (again, this is freakish that it doesn't just work universally, and a glimpse into Sony's odd infrastructure). This preview program will end in November 2018. In addition, when this feature officially launches, a list of compatible games published before April 1, 2018, will be provided on PlayStation.com for reference before you make a change.
