USA attorneys general investigating Google data breach

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

Google exposed user data, chose not to tell public - WSJ

The company found no evidence the information was misused by any developers, Smith said. March was when a software bug was fixed that allowed third-party developers to access personal data.

The company has stated that the closure will occur over the course of the next 10 months, and following the breach Google has also promised to boost user privacy for its other services.

"I think Google does have a public relationship issue and this now makes their lack of openness even worse", Ivan Feinseth, an analyst at Tigress Financial Partners said.

The glitch was live for almost three years, according to the reports, but Google decided not to make the breach public because it feared regulation. Also in recent weeks, Google has been strongly criticized about building a search engine that would censor information as part of a possible-entry into China.

As many as 438 outside apps may have connected with the flawed software.

According to Google, 90% of Google+ user sessions were less than 5 seconds, which is strikingly low compared to other social networks.

Populist party set for gains in Latvian election
Turnout was 54.6 percent of the 1.9 eligible voters, election officials said. A pro-Russia party has won Saturday's parliamentary election in Latvia .

But as the Wall Street Journal reports, the move comes after Google discovered a bug that left private user information open to developers in March, but declined to alert users for fear of regulatory scrutiny.

"The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds", said Google, which is headquartered in Mountain View in northern California, Xinhua reported. Before patching it, Google ran an analysis and found that up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were affected. These include more granular Google Account permissions that'll appear in their own individual dialog boxes and updating the User Data Policy for the consumer Gmail API to limit the apps that can seek permission to your consumer Gmail data.

Allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by President Trump's 2016 U.S. election campaign, has hurt the shares of the world's biggest social network and prompted multiple investigations in the United States and Europe. Somehow, the intimate data of the first user would be included in the collection profile. Instead of reporting this to subscribers of the service, Google made a decision to just let it slide so that it wouldn't be subject to investigation by regulatory agencies.

Call logs and SMS permissions will no longer be sent to developers, while contact interaction data won't be accessible via the Android Contacts API.

Google did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
