People clear debris as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc de Cardassar on the island of Mallorca

A statement from the Foreign Office said: "We are in contact with the Spanish authorities responding to flooding in Majorca, and urgently seeking updates from them".

He said: "My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all the affected by these tragic floods".

Witnesses said a dry creek overflowed, creating a strong current of water and mud that buried cars and tore down trees.

The town of Sant Llorenc is around 60 kilometres east of Palma - the capital of the Mediterranean island.

Two Britons are thought to have been killed during flash floods in Majorca.

A spokeswoman with the regional emergency service said two British nationals and a Dutch woman were among the victims, but she couldn't confirm whether six more people were still missing at midday as local media reported.

Swamped streets and piles of overturned cars, some of them along the guardrails of a major road, were a common sight in Sant Llorenc and other nearby towns on Wednesday. Nadal also announced on social media that his tennis academy on the island would offer shelter to people affected by the floods.

Saudi Arabia to let Turkey search its Istanbul consulate
The 15-man squad arrived on two private planes at Istanbul's Ataturk airport last Tuesday, returning that same day to Riyadh. On Wednesday, State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said the United States "had no advance knowledge" of such a plan.

Authorities said 80 soldiers and seven vehicles from the military's emergency unit had joined more than 100 rescuers deployed in the area on Wednesday. "We had to swim to try to survive".

The couple, who were in their 70s, are said to have died along with cab driver Juan Sillero when the auto was swept away by a torrent of water near the coastal resort of S'Illot.

Weather forecasters reported that eight inches of rain fell in just four hours.

Lawmakers held a minute's silence before the weekly prime minister's question time in parliament on Wednesday morning.

Spain's meteorological office said the neighbouring islands of Ibiza and Formentera were now on high alert as the rain and storms moved there.

Heavy rain has also brought flooding to other parts of Spain, including Barcelona and the Costa del Sol.
