U.S., Russian Space Crew Heading Back To Earth After Booster Failure

Video footage from the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome shows a large plume of smoke coming from the rocket at the moment it failed and footage from inside the capsule shows the two astronauts being violently shaken about.

Astronauts are to make an emergency landing after their Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned on lift-off to the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos's Alexei Ovchinin lifted off as scheduled at 4:40 a.m. ET Thursday from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz booster rocket.

IFAX reported that the two astronauts were alive and were expected to land in Kazakhstan.

The pair was set to dock at the orbiting outpost six hours after launch, but the booster rocket failed minutes after launch.

"Search and rescue teams report they are in contact with the Soyuz crew, who report they are in good condition", Nasa wrote on Twitter.

Hague and Ovchinin will open the hatch to their spacecraft at 12:45 p.m. EDT (1645 GMT), when they will be greeted by their three Expedition 57 crewmates: NASA astronaut Serena M. Auñón-Chancellor, European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev. The first-stage of the Soyuz MS-10 launch appeared flawless until NASA reported the problem just as the crew reached orbit.

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area to recover the crew.
