Report: Giants place OT Flowers on trade block, may cut

The New York Giants are parting ways with 2015 first-round draft pick Ereck Flowers.

In fact, the Giants would take him ninth overall in 2015. Louis Rams selecting Todd Gurley.

Flowers was forced into the starting lineup at left tackle during his rookie season when Will Beatty tore his pectoral muscle in the spring. The Giants attempted to move him to right tackle this season, but it didn't work.

Scouts were concerned about Flowers' pass protection abilities coming out of college, and he proved those concerns to be warranted.

It became clear nearly immediately that Flowers was in over his head as he struggled mightily at the left tackle spot. Those struggles continued this season on the right side, prompting the Giants to cut bait on their former first-round pick.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur confirmed that the report is accurate. "Sometimes a change of scenery is good for a person".

This year did not begin well for Flowers under the new regime led by general manager Dave Gettleman. Heading into Week 3, Shurmur chose to bench Flowers and give his job to Chad Wheeler, who originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent previous year.

Following a Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Flowers was benched in favor of Chad Wheeler, who hasn't provided an enormous upgrade.
