Children's Hospital of Philadelphia reports two recent cases of polio-like illness

And yesterday (Oct. 10), the Illinois Department of Public Health said it had received recent reports of nine children diagnosed with the condition. They include a sudden onset of arm or leg weakness and loss of muscle tone and reflexes.

Health officials will never have a firm count of cases of AFM because not all states require doctors to report them. Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist Mark Hicar said driving the auto is more of a danger than catching AFM.

In a similar case of AFM, Camden Stravers, a three-and-a-half-year-old from Iowa, who was healthy just three months ago, can no longer support his head and suffers from partial paralysis in his arm, 6ABC reported.

AMF is not a new condition, but the increase in cases starting in 2014 is not normal, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

UH said both patients have been discharged, but the Ohio Department of Health and the CC are continuing to monitor the illness. "All but one of the Texas cases are children".

A frightening new illness is on the rise in the US, and it bears a striking resemblance to Polio. "We haven't completed our own investigations yet to confirm it's AFM so we haven't reported to the CDC", said Sherri Davidson, Alabama's state epidemiologist. AFM has been compared to polio because the condition can lead to paralysis.

Various viruses can cause AFM, including West Nile and enteroviruses. Most of the patients are children.

All cases are among infants and children under age six who all reportedly had symptoms of a respiratory illness in the week prior to developing symptoms of AFM. The cause of any individual case of AFM can be hard to determine, and often, no cause is found. CDC specialists will make the final determination if these cases are AFM.

Preventing AFM can start by protecting yourself and children from poliovirus by getting vaccinated, according to the CDC. "If this pattern continues, we should expect to see an increase in AFM cases in 2018".
