NBCUniversal Pulls Controversial Trump Campaign Ad
According to HuffPo, "NBC on Sunday aired a controversial political ad paid for by President Donald Trump's campaign during the prime-time commercial breaks for Sunday Night Football". CNN had refused to run the ad, declaring it "racist", but NBC opted to air it during "Sunday Night Football", a program that's regularly the most watched in America every week. The ad, endorsed by President Donald Trump, was created to fire up fears of a migrant caravan headed toward the United States in advance of Tuesday's midterm elections.
"After further review we recognize the insensitive nature of the ad and have made a decision to cease airing it across our properties as soon as possible", the network reportedly said.
Fox News made a similar decision Monday. "It will not appear on either Fox News Channel or Fox Business Network", she said in a statement on Monday.
The ad compares his behavior to members of the caravan, which mostly comprises adults and children who plan to legally seek asylum at ports of entry into the U.S. The video then urges viewers to "vote Republican" before a voiceover from Trump says he approves the message.
The ad in question isn't just racist, according to those on both the right and the left, but it is packed full of lies which attempt to blame Democrats for the murders that an illegal immigrant named Luis Bacamontes committed back in 2014. He said the media was trying to control what you see and think.
The president's son, Donald Trump Jr., had tweeted over the weekend, noting CNN's refusal to air the advertisement, that "I guess they only run fake news and won't talk about real threats that don't suit their agenda". It is akin to blaming Republicans for criminals who entered the country illegally under Presidents Trump or George W. Bush.
"This ad violates Facebook's advertising policy against sensational content so we are rejecting it", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.
Before the ad aired, Trump had blamed Democrats for the 7,000-strong caravan.
Facebook, too, announced Monday that the ad could not be a paid ad on the site, though users can still post it themselves.
