Lion Air jet had problem with airspeed indicator on last four flights, Indonesia officials say
The spokesman said the instruments were examined by a maintenance crew between the penultimate and final flights.
The US-based aircraft manufacturer plans to warn operators that these jets can abruptly dive because of "erroneous readings from a flight-monitoring system", according to the outlet.
Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Another man, who identified himself as the father of passenger Shandy Johan Ramadhan, a prosecutor in a district on the island where the flight was headed, said Lion Air had "failed" the families of victims.
The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan.
At a meeting on Monday, to address the grieving families of the victims, Tjahjono said that the plane did not explode mid-air and was intact when it plunged into the sea, with its engine's turbines running at high speed.
However, the Times noted, there has been no evidence of widespread problems with airspeed indicators in the Max 8 fleet. He did not provide further details about the problem.
Malfunctioning airspeed indicators have factored in several high-profile crashes, including two more than 20 years ago involving Boeing 757s.
Authorities are yet to recover the jet's cockpit voice recorder from the sea floor, just northeast of Jakarta, where the plane crashed 13 minutes into its flight. "These are the things we are trying to find out: what was the damage and how it was fixed".
Aviation experts also cautioned that it was too early to tell the exact cause of the crash and that the flight recorder still needs to be fully analyzed.
The recorder shows the jet's last four flights all had an airspeed indicator problem.
Syaugi said that the search operation had been extended and would continue through Wednesday.
However, the cockpit voice recorder remains elusive.
Following the crash, reports emerged about problems with the plane's previous flight.
With the data recorder in the hands of investigators, the NTSC has recovered about 69 hours of flying data by the crashed jet during its last 19 trips.
The Wall Street Journal reported that USA aviation regulators also meant to issue safety warnings about potentially suspect flight-control software. He said the drop felt like falling into "a really, really deep hole".
The news was first reported by Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
Capt. Daniel Putut Kuncoro Adi, managing director of Lion Group, said that all information had been handed over to Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Commission, and he could not answer any questions about the fault because of a nondisclosure agreement signed to accommodate the investigation.
They wanted to know why the plane was allowed to fly and demanded there be no let up in recovery efforts.
Cox said that once investigators have all the data, they will work backward to determine if there was a problem with one of the plane's systems or if pilot decisions put the plane in peril. Syahrul Anto, 48, was reported missing by his diving partner on Friday.
