The other big race in the state is the U.S. Senate contest between incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott. That contest was still unresolved by 11am EST (0500 GMT), though Kemp held almost a 7-percentage point lead with 90 per cent of the ballots tallied. "We could not be prouder of the way we ran this race", a tearful Gillum told supporters.

Thirty-nine percent of Floridians registered to vote did so early, either in person or by mail, according to state election figures.

Republicans were eyeing a potential pickup in CT, traditionally a Democratic state, where the contest was too close to call on Wednesday morning.

DeSantis quit his job in Congress to focus on the gubernatorial race, a heated affair that largely reflected the broader national tensions over race and class in the Trump era. DeSantis was elected governor on Tuesday, defeating Tallahasee Mayor Andrew Gillum in a close race. The next governor of Florida has a chance to shape the state's highest court by appointing new justices.

DeSantis' win represents an extension of a decade of trifecta Republican control of the swing state and a resounding win for Trump, who aggressively inserted himself into the race.

Going into Tuesday, Republicans controlled 33 governors' mansions and two-thirds of state legislative chambers. He was a member of the House for a number of years and indeed a member of the leadership considered one of the most promising young politicians in the state.

Governors and hundreds of legislators elected this year will be in office when congressional districts are redrawn after the 2020 Census. But Democrat Christine Hallquist lost her bid to become the first openly transgender US governor in Vermont, where Republican incumbent Phil Scott won re-election.

Voters in Florida have a rare clear choice between a rock-solid conservative and a democratic socialist for governor.

Florida's term-limited governor won a narrow victory for a U.S. Senate seat, flipping yet another seat to the GOP.

Polls before the election showed that health care and gun safety were among the most important issues to Democratic voters. There have also been complaints of malfunctioning voting machines. The margin is too slim for an official result, and may lead to a recount. Her rival, Republican Brian Kemp, won 50.4 percent of the vote to Abrams' 48.7 percent.
