Election Law Experts Decry Brian Kemp's Hacking Allegation in Georgia
07 November 2018, 03:49 | Darnell Patrick
Kemp, who oversees elections as Georgia's secretary of state, vehemently denies charges that he's used his office to make it harder for minorities to vote.
Sunday's accusation of election hacking came with precious few details, but a spokesperson for Kemp's office did tell the Times that the investigation was sparked by an email "talking about trying to hack the Secretary of State's system". And we know what to do about that: vote.
A group of men appearing to belong to the Black Panther Party marched in Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend showing their support for far-left Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams while they were armed with rifles.
Trump opened his speech for Kemp, the embattled Georgia Secretary of State who is running against DemocratStacey Abrams in a very tight race, to the raucous chants of "U.S.A". The AP also reported that through a process Kemp calls "voter roll maintenance", his office has "cancelled over 1.4 million voter registrations since 2012" and that "nearly 670,000 registrations were cancelled in 2017 alone". I just want to say: Jesus don't like ugly. If neither Kemp nor Abrams wins a majority - a distinct possibility with a Libertarian candidate on the ballot - there could be another month of campaigning.
"While we cannot comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber crimes", Kemp's spokeswoman Candice Broce said.
"Kemp tried to play that Trump card to get where he's at", she said, adding that Abrams, by contrast, highlighted unity. Amid the furor over the purported hacking, Kemp announced Monday that the state had not only broken its 2014 record, but has set a new, all-time record for early voting in a midterm election. "RT if you think Abrams is TOO EXTREME for Georgia!" This political stunt from Kemp just days before the election is yet another example of why he can not be trusted and should not be overseeing an election in which he is also a candidate for governor.
Democrats denied Kemp's claim and ripped the investigation as a "political stunt" from a "desperate" candidate.
The Georgia outcome is among the most closely watched of any midterm contests for reasons beyond Abrams' race and gender. Democrats are expected to pick up several governor's seats across the country, particularly in the Midwest region that helped propel Trump to the White House in 2016. His killer was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
