Sir Tim Berners-Lee launches 'Magna Carta for the web' to save internet from abuse

English scientist Tim Berners Lee from the Web Foundation addresses the opening ceremony of annual Web Summit technology conference in Lisb

Since the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners back when he was working at CERN; the Internet has seen many trends and radical shifts.

Berners-Lee said the full terms of the contract would be agreed in the coming months, with the objective to finalize it in May 2019 - the 50/50 moment when more than half of the world's population will be online for the first time. The contract is published by the World Wide Web Foundation - also founded by Berners-Lee.

"Despite all the good we have accomplished, the web has become a machine to create inequalities and divisions, influenced by powerful forces who use it for their own purposes", says Tim Berners-Lee on the web site Inrupt.

One serves as a reminder that the freedom we enjoy on the Internet today will always be in the crosshairs of those who seek power and profit. Currently, almost 60 individuals and organizations, including Richard Branson, Google, Facebook, and the French government have committed to the cause.

Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor at Harvard University and author of The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It said: "To me, the most important function of the contract is to remind people that the web we have isn't the only one possible".

So that anyone, no matter who they are or where they live, can participate actively online.

On the other hand, companies will look forward to making the Internet more affordable. It should be data that you can control.

Red Dead Redemption II players have been venting their anger by sending a real person named Colm O' Driscoll hate messages online. Fans of the popular console game Red Dead Redemption 2 can explore a hidden Mexico map by exploiting a glitch in the game.

Berners-Lee told the opening of the Europe's largest technology conference that everyone had assumed his breakthrough in 1989, that connected humanity to technology, would lead to good things - and it had for a while.

So the web has rich and relevant content for everyone.

Among the speakers expected on these themes figure Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower who has revealed in the beginning of the year the scandal of Cambridge Analytica, a company for which he worked as a research director, and who is accused of having used for political purposes the personal data of 50 million users of Facebook.

"If you sign up to the principles, you can't do censorship", said Berners-Lee. "Women and girls are much less likely to have access (to the internet)".

"The genie may seem to have come out of the bottle, but the internet has surprised us many times", he added.

Like other tech pioneers, Berners-Lee saw the internet as a platform that would open new horizons but he is disappointed with how it has evolved. The contract means a real commitment to dignity, justice and equality from governments, companies and citizens.

Those that do fork-out a premium for prioritised traffic, in this scenario, contribute to an ecosystem that creates unfair advantages and reduced consumer power and choice - putting small businesses and start-ups at the mercy of established companies with bigger pockets.
