Rallies were staged across the Tampa Bay area on Thursday to support special counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election may be in jeopardy.
Trump blamed the recusal for the appointment of Mueller, who took over the Russian Federation investigation two months later and began examining whether Trump's hectoring of Sessions was part of a broader effort to obstruct the probe. Mitt Romney, who just won election to the U.S. Senate from Utah, also tweeted that the Mueller probe should be allowed to proceed "to its conclusion unimpeded".
Several of the groups involved in Thursday evening's protests have always been planning what they call "rapid response" protests if Trump tried to fire Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who had been overseeing Mueller's investigation. The former attorney general submitted a letter of resignation at the president's "request".
He also said on CNN past year that he could see a scenario in which Sessions' replacement doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt". Dick Durbin, noting that the move against Sessions happened one day after the midterm elections. Trump said Wednesday that he did not plan to stop the investigation.
House Democrats said on Wednesday that they would attempt to include a measure protecting Mueller into an appropriations bill that Congress is due to consider later this year.
"Americans must have answers immediately as to the reasoning behind" Trump's move to remove Sessions, he said.

Trump had enjoyed Whitaker's cable TV appearances - including one on CNN in which he suggested that the Mueller probe be starved of resources - and the two men soon struck a bond.

White House Revokes Press Pass Of CNN's Jim Acosta
During the news conference, Trump sparred with White House correspondents when they posed questions he did not like. Acosta held onto it, and raised his arm to stop the aide from taking it, in the process making contact with her.
Some Republicans appear to have shared the Democrats' concern over the future of the inquiry, which is being led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Under the special counsel regulation, Whitaker has the power to block any "investigative or procedural step" Mueller recommends, such as bringing an indictment or subpoena, if he determines it to be "inappropriate or unwarranted under established Departmental practices".
Protesters gathered Thursday in cities from NY to California in a warning to the White House not to derail Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.
Whitaker, who had a stint as a legal commentator for CNN, has been vocal in his criticism of Mueller's investigation and its scope.
The senator said he found the timing of Sessions' departure "very suspect" and suggested it would cause a "constitutional crisis" if Trump made the move as a "prelude" to limiting the Russian Federation investigation.
On Thursday, the Acosta incident entered even more freaky territory when the White House was accused of tweeting a video doctored to make the reporter appear more aggressive in fending off the female press aide who tried to remove his mic.
