Fanned by high overnight winds, multiple fires have ripped through the state of California in recent days.

The first of the fires broke out on Thursday, northwest of Los Angeles, and roared south, with an estimated 75,000 homes evacuated in western Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County.

With the area still reeling from the shooting at the Thousand Oaks bar, the Hill fire has spread to 10,000 acres, quickly shutting down the 101 Freeway.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the fire has grown to 8,000 acres as is burning through Oak Park into Agoura Hills.

U.S. media reports that schools have also been closed and evacuated due to the fire, and animals have been moved out of the LA Zoo in Griffith Park.

Melissa Etheridge was also forced to evacuate, and tweeted that she was safe in Santa Monica.

As a result of the fire jumping the freeway, the City of Malibu was placed under mandatory evacuation orders, an emergency alert stated.

A lot of the resources assigned to the Hill Fire were transferred to the Woolsey Fire, which became the priority for firefighting efforts with heavy air support and hundreds of personnel working Friday. It burned in the same path as the 2013 Springs Fire that torched 24,000 acres before running into the Pacific Ocean.

More than 15,000 structures in Butte County remain threatened by the blaze, which continues to grow under "extreme fire and weather conditions", according to the latest incident report.

Friday morning, fire officials reported that the fire had jumped Highway 101 near the city of Calabasas.

Scott Maclean, the state's forestry and fire protection spokesman, said a number of civilians and firefighters had been injured in the fire north of Sacramento but it would be days before the authorities knew whether anyone had died. Fire engines were not able to reach the fire, and firefighters were forced to hike in on foot and hose down vulnerable areas, while a firefighting helicopter hovered overhead. A second round of Santa Ana winds is forecast to whip the area Sunday through Tuesday, though it may be weaker than Friday's.
