Medifem hospital raises awareness on breast cancer; screens over 900 women

A study conducted among 400 000 women in the UK Biobank looked at approximately 450 biomarkers and found that earlier risers are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who up stay up late at night.
Interestingly, the study also found that sleeping longer isn't necessarily better, as the analysis showed that women who slept longer than the recommended seven to eight hours per night increased their chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer by 20% per additional hour.
"Our findings are based on questions related to morning or evening preference rather than actually whether people get up earlier or later in the day", said Rebecca Richmond, of the University of Bristol.
But the team point out that many factors are involved in a person developing breast cancer and that these numbers are not an absolute risk.
"These intriguing results add to the growing body of evidence that there is some overlap between the genetics of when we'd prefer to sleep and our breast cancer risk, but more research is required to unravel the specifics of this relationship", he said. "These findings have potential policy implications for influencing sleep habits of the general population in order to improve health and reduce risk of breast cancer among women".
Analysis of data obtained from the UK Biobank women (2,740 new cases of breast cancer and 149,064 controls), found similar results; morning preference reduced the risk of breast cancer by 48 per cent. The Breast Cancer Walk, which centered at the Manhattanville College Campus and directed its way up to SUNY Purchase, totaled five kilometers.
