One town in northern California, the ironically named Paradise, population 27,000, has been incinerated, burned to the ground a fire which left apocalyptic scenes of empty, smouldering buildings and burned out cars in its wake.
Strong blustery winds combined with dry conditions have helped the blaze spread, after weeks without rain and low humidity at the height of the wildfire season in north California.
One of the worst-affected areas is the northern town of Paradise, California, where 18,000 acres were destroyed by the fire in just seven hours on Thursday, writes Newsweek.
After flames ripped through the town Thursday, Paradise (population 27,000) has been declared nearly a complete loss.
"This was a rapidly moving fire", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record.
Residents of the beachside city of Malibu have been ordered to evacuate as three fast-moving wildfires raged in California on Friday morning, including one that also spurred the evacuation of 75,000 homes near a city that was still reeling from a mass shooting. "We had to ride through flames to get here", he said from the side of a road west of Paradise.

The Camp Fire was the fiercest of several wind-driven blazes that erupted across the state on Thursday.

There is no listed containment percentage for the wildfire just yet.
