McClain, Saint-Jacques and Kononenko will now complete a six-month mission aboard the ISS, where they will complete experiments and test new technologies.

The launch marked the first crewed flight of the Soyuz since a major failure of the rocket in October when the booster malfunctioned with an astronaut and a cosmonaut aboard.

NASA confirmed that "the spacecraft separation; Soyuz capsule and crew are safely in orbit".

American Anne McClain, Canadian David Saint-Jacques and Russian Oleg Kononenko successfully took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday on their way to the International Space Station.

A Soyuz-FG rocket carrying NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos' Alexei Ovchinin failed two minutes into its flight on October 11, activating an automatic rescue system that sent their capsule into a steep ride back to Earth.

This is the first launch of manned spacecraft after the accident the carrier rocket "Soyuz-FG" with manned spacecraft "Soyuz MS-10", which was wrecked soon after launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome on October 11.

The three astronauts onboard Russia's Soyuz rocket have safely reached the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency and Oleg Kononenko of Russian space agency Roscosmos docked with the station at 11:33 p.m. (1723 GMT; 12:33 p.m. EST) Monday.

"Risk is part of our profession", the 54-year-old said.

"We are psychologically and technically prepared for blast-off and any situation which, God forbid, may occur on board".

Following a six-hour journey making four orbits of Earth, the crew will dock the Soyuz to the station's Poisk module to begin their mission on the orbital laboratory.

Three astronauts have successfully blasted off to the International Space Station from Kazakhstan, a ideal launch that follows October's aborted mission. "We feel very ready for it", she said.

Saint-Jacques has spent years training for the six-month mission, which was originally scheduled for December 20 but was moved up after the aborted Soyuz launch.

Last month Russian Federation said the October launch had failed because of a sensor that was damaged during assembly at the Baikonur cosmodrome but insisted the spacecraft remained reliable.

McClain served in Iraq and has represented the United States in women's rugby.

He recently joked Russian Federation would send a mission to the Moon to "verify" whether or not NASA lunar landings ever took place.

The mission is expected to last 194 days, according to TASS, which means the trio will remain on board through July 2019.
