Facebook's seized files published by MPs

The emails feature in a case being heard in a California court filed against the giant by the now-defunct USA app developer Six4Three.

Internal emails at Facebook Inc., including those involving Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, were published online by a committee of United Kingdom lawmakers investigating social media's role in the spread of fake news.

The documents - which includes internal emails sent by senior executives - were obtained from the chief of a software firm that is suing the tech giant.

Facebook said in a statement released to AFP that the Six4Three emails "are only part of the story and are presented in a way that is very misleading without additional context".

Facebook is accused of using this data to assess "not just how many people had downloaded apps, but how often they used them". Kramer has been in a legal battle with Facebook since 2015 over developer access to user data.

Facebook entered into so-called whitelist agreements with companies, granting them access to users' data - even after they made policy changes that restricted access for others, according to The New York Times. Data breaches, allegations of political bias by Facebook in content recommendations and lobbying tactics have also drawn questions from lawmakers.

-Friends' data has been a big source of revenue for Facebook, thanks to growing revenues from app developers.

The summary of the committee's key issues pertaining to the documents said the documents also show Facebook knew that an update to its Android mobile app phone system - which enabled the Facebook app to collect user call logs - would be controversial.

Officials also debated in emails whether to give app developers that spent money in advertising better access to its data, while simultaneously taking "aggressive positions" against apps that competed with them by denying them access to data. When Twitter launched six-second video clip platform Vine, Zuckerberg approved revoking their access to Facebook's API.

'To mitigate any bad PR, Facebook planned to make it as hard of possible for users to know that this was one of the underlying features of the upgrade of their app'.

"We've prepared reactive PR", Osofsky wrote, to which Zuckerberg replied, "Yup, go for it".
