Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 855 Processor for 5G Phones

Qualcomm представила процессор для ноутбуков с Windows 10

The first 5G phones in the world will launch in America - because it's now the only country on earth with any meaningful 5G deployment - and those 5G phones will use Qualcomm processors with Qualcomm 5G modems.

We've known for a while now that Samsung is going to make a 5G version of the Galaxy S10, set to launch in Korea and other markets where 5G coverage is set to go live in the coming months. 5G connectivity on mobile devices will be made possible with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem and QTM052 mmWave antenna modules.

Snapdragon 855 is first commercial platform to support multi-gigabit 5G.

It was confirmed earlier this week that a prototype Samsung 5G phone would be shown off at Qualcomm's Tech Summit in Hawaii.

Samsung should be one of the first companies to come out with a 5G-ready phone. And now, it is unofficially official that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Solution is the next flagship SoC from Qualcomm, which will power the majority of the flagship smartphones of 2018. The Snapdragon 855 is the first chipset from Qualcomm with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which will help in AI computations. So, despite a fair amount of skepticism that 5G would ever arrive at all, it has, and it's all but certainly going to be part of most major smartphones launched in the USA within the next year or two.

Also getting more smarts is the image signal processor for taking photos and videos using Snapdragon 855-powered smartphones.

AT&T plans to expand service in the first half of 2019 to parts of seven additional cities including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, California. In addition, the company says that its 3D Sonic Sensor will be able to detect fingerprints, even if there are "numerous contaminants" on the display, while providing high levels of accuracy and security. The rapid development and rigorous work that went into next year's round of 5G network deployments were a big theme here at Tech Summit day 1, and it's not hard to see how insanely fast data speeds stand to change what we expect from our smartphones. What are you hoping for in the new Qualcomm chipset or do you not really care that much and think most improvements these days are incremental?

Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm senior vice president and general manager of mobile, said Tuesday that the Snapdragon 855 will contain the company's fourth-generation AI engine. Qualcomm says it's built computer vision hardware into the chip, enabling phones to better recognize people and objects they're looking at.
