Migrants jump border fence in Tijuana to try to reach US

Migrant caravan relocated to new shelter farther from the border

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 3 (UPI) - Thousands of migrants from the Central American caravan in Tijuana, Mexico, have put their names on a waitlist for a preliminary political asylum interview with US authorities - a wait that could be many months.

Thousands of migrants, mostly Hondurans, have joined caravans in recent weeks in an effort to speed across Mexico to request refuge at the USA border.

A second taller fence past a hill kept them from reaching California, creating an area heavily guarded by border patrols. Numerous migrants have taken to camping on its flat rooftop.

The thousands of predominantly Central American migrants who have died or gone missing on the journey to the USA are among 56,800 people-including refugees and asylum seekers-worldwide who have died or disappeared since 2014, the AP has found in a separate report.

The crossings started just before dusk when "three thin people" managed to "squeeze through the fence on the beach".
