Huawei CFO and deputy chair Wanzhou Meng has reportedly been arrested in Canada on the USA government's request for allegedly violating United States trade sanctions with Iran. The ban was sought by Meng, who has a bail hearing Friday.

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time", department spokesperson Ian McLeod said in a statement to the newspaper. "The ban was sought by Ms. Meng", McLeod said.

US authorities have been probing Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, since at least 2016 on allegations that it shipped USA -derived tech products to Iran and other countries in violation of US export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April. No other details were available.

Huawei has not responded to Global News' request for comment.

The Justice Department probe, first reported by the Wall Street Journal in April, follows a series of US actions aimed at stopping or reducing access by Huawei and Chinese smartphone maker ZTE Corp to the USA economy amid allegations the companies could be using their technology to spy on Americans.

Earlier this year, it barred United States companies from exporting to Chinese telecommunications firm ZTE over violations of the Iranian sanctions, effectively shutting down the firm.

USA media have reported that the U.S. is investigating Huawei for potential violations of United States sanctions against Iran.

The Huawei statement said Meng, who also has gone by the English names Cathy and Sabrina, was detained when she was transferring flights in Canada.

Ms. Meng's arrest comes amid a year-long US government campaign against a company it views as a national-security threat.

Huawei is one of China's most prominent technology companies - a huge telecommunications firm, and the world's second-biggest smartphone manufacturer. "The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", it said.

Huawei's CFO was arrested in Canada, according to a new report in The Wall Street Journal. Mark Warner conveyed "grave concerns" over the possibility that the Chinese government might be using Huawei equipment to spy on and interfere with foreign governments. Huawei has said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.

Canada is yet to take any action against the Chinese company's 5G technology.
