Lawmakers plan to send a two-week extension of interim government funding to President Donald Trump this week, putting their fight over border wall funding on hold to mourn the death of former President George H.W. Bush. The former president will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda ahead of a service at the National Cathedral on Wednesday.
Further, other conservatives and their staffers on Capitol Hill caution that such a close deadline to the Christmas holiday season may make securing Trump's $5 billion in border wall funding more hard as many rank-and-file members will feel more pressure to accept Republican leadership's proposal closer to Christmas.
President Donald Trump is keeping the pressure on congressional Democrats over funding for his promised border wall.
On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, called on Trump to support a $1.6 billion border security compromise between Senate Republicans and Democrats, instead of the $5 billion figure Trump and House Republicans support.
Trump's planned meeting with Sen.
"House Democrats will continue to stand firm in opposition to the border wall boondoggle and, while we are willing to negotiate on how best to secure our border, we will never support wasting tax dollars on a wall created to gin up the Republican base". The White House is expecting that to be between seven and 14 days, said a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly.
The Senate, narrowly controlled by Republicans, would also have to approve the measure this week, which would continue funding for several agencies at last year's levels.
"If they [congressional leaders] come to talk about an extension because of President Bush's passing, I would absolutely consider it and probably give it", Trump said.
The GOP-led House has not yet approved a Homeland Security funding bill.
Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., were scheduled to meet with the president on Tuesday, but that sit down at the White House was postponed until next week.
Besides the funding bill, Congress is considering a sweeping criminal justice package with sentencing reforms, a farm bill that's a top priority of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other items before they adjourn for the year. He said, "I think that's the path to getting a signature and avoiding a government shutdown".
Hoyer then told reporters that he could he could help draft border security language in such a vague manner to appease most of his Democrat caucus.
Congress has already passed full-year funding for most other federal agencies, meaning they would remain open. Federal funding for those is set to expire at midnight on Friday.
