US Marine aircraft suffer 'mishap' off Japanese coast, search-and-rescue underway

A U.S. Navy helicopter approaches to land on the deck of aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, a missile cruiser and a nuclear-powered submarine as the USS Normady sails in the Bay of Bengal during Exercise Malabar 2015 some 152 miles off

Two American warplanes crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan's southwestern coast after a midair collision early Thursday, and rescuers found one of the seven crew members in stable condition while searching for the others, officials said.

A United States defense official told AFP there had been a crash after the plane took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan.

The Marine Corps offered little information in a statement about the incident.

Search and rescue operations were underway following a "mishap".

It said in a statement that the accident is under investigation and gave no further details.

The incident, which involved an F/A-18 and a KC-130 that took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, happened about 2 a.m. during "regularly scheduled training", a Marine Corps statement said.

The aircraft were identified as a KC-130-a plane involved in aerial refueling-and an F/A-18 Hornet-a twin engine fighter jet. Officials said the information was provided by the US side.

Search and rescue missions were being led by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces, ABC News reported.

The US military has about 50,000 troops stationed in Japan.
