But breaking four records isn't the only thing on SpaceX's plate this week - the company is targeting 1:16 p.m. ET Wednesday for a Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral, this time with thousands of pounds of cargo for the International Space Station. The Falcon 9 rocket blasted into a clear, chilly sky; the first-stage booster was aiming for a touchdown back at the launch site, once its job was done.
The US military described Wednesday's mission as "a successful launch but a non-nominal landing".
First baby is born using transplanted womb from dead woman
An estimated one in 500 women have no wombs or abnormal wombs due to hysterectomies, inherited disease, malformation or infection. Doctors also removed the womb, partly so the woman would no longer have to take anti-rejection medicines.
The descent carried the Falcon 9 to an area off the coast from the landing zone where it seemed to gently settle and momentarily hover just above the surface of the waves, before finally pitching over and splashing into the water.
This mission also served as the first time SpaceX launched the same booster a third time.
Koenigsmann said the booster deliberately avoided land after sensing a problem, a built-in safety feature, and even managed to touch down upright in the Atlantic, atop its landing legs.
- Three days and 3,000 miles apart, SpaceX is aiming for their second launch this week, this time with a cargo flight to the space station. "Recovery ship dispatched", Space X boss Elon Musk said on Twitter. "Given this event, we will likely add a backup pump & lines". "And, as much as we are disappointed in this missed landing - or landing in the water, rather, instead of land - it shows the system overall knows how to recover from certain malfunctions".
The mission is SpaceX's 16th for NASA, as part of a long-term contract to ferry supplies to space. In the background, viewers could still hear the team on-console making callouts as the rocket's landing burn started, culminating in a call for the landing team to "move to contingency procedure [s]", the only SpaceX affirmation that something went wrong. SpaceX redesigned those COPVs after a September 2016 pad explosion in order to meet NASA safety requirements for future commercial crew missions.
