World urged to tackle 'urgent threats' as UN climate talks begin

Nations must triple efforts to achieve Paris climate goals: Study

Naturalist Sir David Attenborough sounded the climate change hysteria alarm on Monday at the opening ceremony of United Nations, warning that civilization is about to collapse.

"Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale".

Speaking at the opening of the United Nations COP24 Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland, Attenborough implored the assembled delegates and decision-makers to listen to the voices of those they represent - while there's still time to act.

The comments came at the beginning of a two-week climate conference in Katowice, Poland, where emissaries from almost 200 nations are meeting to determine how the world can dramatically scale back greenhouse gas emissions to abide by the landmark Paris climate agreement and, by doing so, stave off the worst effects of climate change.

In 2015, the Paris agreement deal saw nations agree to limit global temperature rises to below two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) and under 1.5C if possible.

"The world is at a crossroads and decisive action in the next two years will be crucial to tackle these urgent threats", they said in the joint statement.

HANNA FRANZEN via Getty Images Greta Thunberg, 15, said world leaders who skip the climate summit are "very irresponsible".

"We are already seeing increased impacts of climate change in China", says a young woman.

What are you doing to save our planet?

President Donald Trump has threatened to pull the USA out of the Paris agreement because of what he says is the economic damage the treaty's provisions would cause. To inject momentum, the World Bank Group on Monday said it would provide a further US$200 billion over five years from the start of the next decade.

Mourinho: United form not down to my relationship with players
"Very hard match for us but a very hard match for them in spite of our problems, with players, with selections in spite of that it won't be easy".

"Mr Attenborough has been leading a campaign to engage ordinary people with the COP24 conference, leading a campaign called #TakeYourSeats, calling on members of the public to submit comments, questions, pictures and videos, as well as a series of global opinion polls curated in to 'the people's address" shown as part of his presentation.

It said about $50 billion would be earmarked for climate adaptation, a recognition that some adverse effects of global warming could not be avoided anymore but required a change in practice. What we need are resources and that costs money.

"Katowice (Poland) may show us if there will be any domino effect", from the USA withdrawal, Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and an architect of the Paris agreement, said in the AFP report.

He added the Paris agreement was not enough and that more must be done.

Expectations for the Polish talks are low: the atmosphere of political unity built in Paris has been shattered by a wave of populist governments that place national agendas before collective action.

"This is the challenge on which this generation's leaders will be judged", he said.

UN General Assembly president Maria Espinosa told AFP that mankind was "in danger of disappearing" if climate change was allowed to progress at its current rate.

Well Mark... the COP24 conference is being described as the most important gathering on climate change since the 2015 Paris agreement.

The talks in Poland also aim to draw up the rulebook for making the Paris deal operational, and poorer countries will be looking for a boost to the finance being made available to help them develop cleanly.

Frank Bainimarama, prime minister of Fiji and president of last year's COP, said developed nations must act now to save the planet.
