Ocasio-Cortez Calls on D.C. to Pay Higher Wages for Staffers
Incoming congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez intends to be one of the few lawmakers on Capitol Hill who pay their interns, the New York Democrat said in a tweet Tuesday. A 2017 study by Washington based advocacy group Pay Our Interns reported that 8% of Republican House representatives pay their interns compared with 3.6% of Democratic representatives.
In short, even supposing the numbers involved in Ocasio-Cortez's tweet were accurate - a big if - the two reports are not comparable in any meaningful way.
"It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff just bc Republicans want to make a statement about 'fiscal responsibility'".
"This week I went to dive spot in DC for some late night food".
Ocasio-Cortez's spokesman later said the point "was more about how we care so little about the "how do you pay for it" when we are talking about war and military spending". I chatted up the staff.
Trump picks William Barr as next U.S. attorney general
And if they argue that Barr will be Trump's stooge, they better have more evidence than the two statements discussed above. When nominating Barr to serve as attorney general in 1991, Bush hailed the lawyer as "a man that I respect enormously".
Ocasio-Cortez also revealed that she can not afford an apartment in Washington D.C. until her Congressional salary starts, and is relying on savings to get by in the meantime.
Ocasio-Cortez pulled the information from The Nation, a left-leaning magazine. "Don't y'all have jobs to do?" she tweeted. The House will be given $8.8 million to distribute across members' offices, and the Senate will be given $5 million.
She shared a tweet that there are no apartments under $1,000-a-month on Capitol Hill- something that an intern making "zero dollars" would of not be able to afford without financial backing from their families. Schumer's office told Rolling Stone that the ad "was made in error" and that beginning in January, they will offer "a stipend to eligible interns".
Cortez critiqued her initial meetings on social media Thursday, writing "Right now Freshman members of Congress are at a "Bipartisan" orientation w/ briefings on issues".
