Reports: Trump Will Pick Heather Nauert to Be UN Ambassador
President Trump has chosen State Department official Heather Nauert to serve as the next USA ambassador to the United Nations, a report said on Thursday.
Nauert will be replacing Nikki Haley who announced that she will be retiring at the end of the year, saying that she wanted to "take a little time off" after her two terms in office.
In addition to that role, Ms Nauert was appointed acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs in March this year.
Back in October, Nauert, a former Fox News host, was believed to be a "leading contender" for the position, sources familiar with the selection process said at the time.
She will face a variety of challenges if confirmed for the job, including championing USA efforts to contain Iran's influence in the Middle East and ensuring the global body maintains tough sanctions on North Korea as Washington tries to negotiate an end to Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.
Two administration officials also confirmed Trump's plans to the Associated Press. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly before Trump's announcement.
Three killed in Iran 'terror attack'
A suicide bomber killed at least three people in Iran's southeastern port city of Chabahar on Thursday, state media reported. Chabahar city governor Rahmdel Bameri said many people were also wounded in the 10 am (0630 GMT) attack.
Requests for comment to the state department and the White House were not immediately returned.
Haley rattled the United Nations when she arrived in January 2017 vowing that the United States will be "taking names" of countries that oppose Trump's foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel.
The current State Department spokeswoman has earned the trust of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, Bloomberg reported.
One of the reports came from Fox News, where Ms Nauert has previously worked as a presenter.
Her appointment to the United Nations role would have to be approved by the US Senate.
Shut out from the top by Tillerson and his inner circle, Nauert developed relationships with career diplomats.
