Emergency services have been interrupted in several U.S. cities

US investigating Century Link internet outage 911 failures

The company said the mysterious "network element" issue impacted service at 15 of its data centers, across both Europe and North America. Residents received emergency alerts on their smartphones with alternatives to 911 phone numbers.

The interruption began Thursday.

Officials in Jefferson Co. told 13 NEWS they were receiving reports of outages in the area. The outage has continued into Friday, prompting FCC chairman Ajit Pai to issue a statement calling for an investigation into the company's response.

The Iowa State Patrol said a county's 911 cellphone calls were being routed to the agency's office in Des Moines.

Many CenturyLink customers in east Idaho say their internet service had been restored Friday but thousands of users across the country are still reporting that services are down and not working.
