Windows 10 overtakes Windows 7

Report: Windows 10 Takes Over Windows 7

Oh, and if you'd care to invest in the upcoming Azure-Powered Windows Virtual Desktop then those Windows 7 updates will be yours as part of the deal. Some of this may be an ongoing correction since it isn't clear why Windows 7 (32-bit) would see positive adoption figures this late in its life cycle, but the size of the gap between consumer and gamer adoption of Windows 10 shows that the two markets are on very different trajectories. Online stat-tracking service Net Market Share puts Windows 10 at 39.22 percent of usage, versus 36.90 percent for Windows 7. That's as of December 2018.

Windows 10's growth to majority is a big milestone for Microsoft as it continues to grapple with a fragmentation in its OS ecosystem and enterprises still clinging on to older Windows software. When Windows 10 arrived in 2015, anyone with a genuine license for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 was given the option to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. It's the first month ever in which Windows 10 has been on top.

Microsoft hasn't confirmed the bug, but the company did say in the release notes of the most recent preview build of Windows 10 19H1 that it resolved a problem affecting FLAC support in the operating system. At the beginning of the year, market share sat at 34.29 and 42.39 percent for Windows 10 and Windows 7, respectively. This time it is broken FLAC support in Windows 10.

In the middle of past year, Microsoft said that Windows 10 was running on almost 700 million devices each month.

Back at Microsoft's Build 2015 conference the company claimed it would hit 1 billion Windows 10 devices by the middle of past year. One year later, it admitted that prediction was overly optimistic-partly because of the demise of the Windows Phone.
