Former Hearthstone Dev Ben Brode Resurfaces with $30M from Net Ease & a Deal with Marvel

The new studio founded by former Hearthstone folks including game director Ben Brode are working on a mysterious game with Marvel game. If this ends up being a Marvel-themed CCG, then we can probably expect a similar business model to Hearthstone, where players get in for free, can grind for currency or just buy card packs outright. Together, they formed a new studio called "Second Dinner", things have been quiet on that front for a while but this week, we started hearing some new things.

Details are now scarce, but Chu brazenly insists that "In all likelihood, this will be the best [Marvel] game ever made".

Another couple confirmed details from the announcement video: the game is being built on the Unity engine (same as Hearthstone) and it will use Amazon Web Services. Again, like Hearthstone. Oh, also, Second Dinner has a ton of cash, thanks to a $30 million minority investment from Chinese tech and gaming giant NetEase.

NetEase vice president Ethan Wang said: "The Second Dinner team has a strong track record of delivering quality games".

As well as the huge Square Enix-published Marvel game that we know is in development, it seems the Disney-owned company has something else in the works, too. It's going to be incredible! They both left Blizzard Entertainment eight months ago and have been working on a new game. "Or Mighty! Or quite possibly all of the above!"

"I've worked with Hamilton and Ben for years and they are exactly who we want making Marvel games", said Jay Ong, the head of Marvel Games. Currently, a prototype of the game has been put together and it is able to be playtested.

Second Dinner is also looking to hire a client engineer and a technical artist for their upcoming venture.

Second Dinner aims to "make deep, satisfying games that are optimized for mobile" according to its official site.
