A spokeswoman for the U.S. trade representative's office, which is leading the USA negotiating team, said talks would continue on Wednesday and "a statement will likely follow then".

The Chinese military has moved to intercept USA warships sailing through the contested South China Sea in the latest of what has been a series of tense encounters involving the two powers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Envoys will have "positive and constructive discussions" during meetings Monday and Tuesday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang.

China claims nearly all of the strategic South China Sea and frequently lambastes the United States and its allies for freedom of navigation naval operations near Chinese-occupied islands.

Wall Street stocks rose for the third straight session on Tuesday (Jan 8), boosted by optimism over US-China trade talks.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in December agreed to put on hold a spiraling trade dispute of tit-for-tat import tariffs on hundreds of billions worth of goods.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said that the conduct of the US ship had violated China's and global law, and that China had sent military ships and aircraft to identify and warn off the ship.

"I think China wants to get it resolved - their economy's not doing well", Mr Trump told reporters on Sunday. That meeting would likely include a senior Chinese government official along with trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

A US Navy guided-missile destroyer on Monday sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea where Beijing has built military installations, sparking anger in China as trade talks between the two countries kicked off.

Trump imposed import tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods past year and threatened more to pressure Beijing to change its practices on issues ranging from industrial subsidies to intellectual property and hacking.

For their part, Chinese officials are unhappy with USA curbs on exports of "dual use" technology with possible military applications.

"This trade fight couldn't have come at a worse time for China".

The Global Times said China's growing economy means it can "carry out a more intense boycott" of trade with the United States if needed.

The Trump administration's calculus regarding how much to stress either increased purchases of USA goods, on the one hand, or structural reforms reflects a divide within the White House.

The negotiations, which were originally scheduled to last just two days, mark the first time that large mid-level trade delegations have met to hash out specifics of a potential deal since the Trump administration first slapped tariffs on Chinese goods. There are concerns that USA growth, 3.4 percent in the third quarter, is also slowing even as the country's unemployment rate remains almost at a five-decade low.

Ross told CNBC the immediate trade issues would be easiest to tackle while enforcement issues and structural reforms, such as intellectual property rights and market access, would be more challenging to resolve. They complain China's companies are treated unfairly in national security reviews of proposed corporate acquisitions, though nearly all deals are approved unchanged.
