Mohamed Salah: Liverpool and Egypt forward named Caf African Player of the Year

Salah wins 2018 CAF Awards

Last year saw him also retain the BBC African Footballer of the Year prize, as well as finishing sixth in the Ballon d'Or standings.

He also scored twice in last summer's World Cup in Russian Federation, marking Egypt's first appearance in the tournament in 28 years.

Egypt striker Mohamed Salah has been named African Footballer of the Year for the second successive year at the Confederation of African Football's 2018 awards ceremony in Dakar on Tuesday.

Salah beat fellow nominees, Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Egyptian forward was voted the victor at the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) 2018 awards ceremony in Dakar on Tuesday.

Salah also beat these two players last year for him to win the player of the year award for the first time in his career. Ahead of the event, CAF Executive Committee has awarded the hosting rights for 2019 AFCON to Egypt.

The Egyptian has shown no signs of slowing down this season either, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists so far for Liverpool in the Premier League.

Salah was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).

He became the first player to do so after Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure, who claimed it four years in a row between 2011 and 2014.

He also scored twice for the Pharaohs at the Russia World Cup.

Men's National Team of the Year: Madagascar, Mauritania, Uganda.

South African Chrestinah Kgatlana was voted Women's Player of the Year and South Africa coach Desiree Ellis and the Nigeria national team were the other female winners.

For the Goal of the Year; a new addition to the CAF Awards, South African female striker, Kgatlana was the proud victor.
