Woman dies after getting trapped inside Toronto clothing donation bin

Woman dies after being found unconscious in clothing donation bin

On Tuesday, a Toronto woman died after getting stuck inside a bin, while a 34-year-old Vancouver man died December 30, just before the new year, after becoming trapped in a Community Living Society bin in Ambleside Park in West Vancouver.

A woman is dead after she was found unconscious in a clothing donation bin in the city's west end. Authorities cut open the metal box to get the woman out and paramedics administered CPR, but later pronounced her dead at the scene, Global News reported.

In the wake of his death, charities called for the bins to be removed.

At an emergency meeting held last Thursday, Inclusion BC and its member agencies made a decision to remove 146 bins that are located in Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Sunshine Coast, the Interior and on Vancouver Island.

The circumstances surrounding the incident do not appear suspicious and the death is likely accidental, police told CBC video producer Tony Smyth.

Since 2015, there have been at least eight deaths involving the bins across the country. City Manager Lambert Chu said it's only until a safer option can be provided. Instead, they ruled the incident a case of misadventure.

Taheri also proposed installing an intelligent motion detector system inside of the donation bins that would be able to recognize the difference between a bag of clothes and a human body.

It has been suggested that the design of the bins is responsible for the people becoming trapped inside. In the Fall, he tasked his first-year engineer students to design a new donation bin that would prevent people from crawling inside. Donators would have to use a lever to move the rotational top in order to place their bag in a small opening.

In Richmond, organizations have been given until Wednesday to remove bins from public property.

"The fact that there are many types, it makes it challenging", he said.
