De Blasio announces health care coverage for all New Yorkers
New York City on Tuesday launched a $100-million USA health insurance program to cover 600,000 uninsured city residents, including those unable to afford coverage and people living in the United States illegally, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
The Timesreports on Mayor de Blasio's plan to "guarantee health care for all New Yorkers", legal and otherwise. And we have now in New York City something that we can build on. "From this moment on in New York City, everyone is guaranteed the right to health care".
In a tweet on Tuesday, the New York Immigration Coalition applauded de Blasio's effort to provide healthcare to all New York City residents and argued that comprehensive coverage "must be extended to everyone in the state".
NYC Care, which will be launched in the Bronx borough in the summer of 2019, will expand across the entire city by 2021 and cost at least $100 million annually, according to a statement from the mayor's office.
"We are saying the word guarantee because we can make it happen", the mayor added, emphasizing that the program would be unprecedented in the United States.
'We also have a way to provide direct health care to a lot of our neighbors who are undocumented, they're still part of our community and they need health care'. "While the federal government works to gut health care for millions of Americans, New York City is leading the way by guaranteeing that every New Yorker has access to quality, comprehensive access to care, regardless of immigration status or their ability to pay".
"Under NYC Care, 600,000 New Yorkers, including our undocumented brothers and sisters, will have access to healthcare", declared Winnie Wong, founder of the advocacy group People for Bernie.
There will be no tax hikes to fund NYC Care, which will be financed by the city's public health budget. "The Mayor must stop abusing the middle class and treating us like his personal ATM".
De Blasio said it will be paid for through the public health care system and he believes it will ultimately save money by preventing trips to the emergency room.
The mayor made the historic surprise announcement Tuesday during the MSNBC morning program Morning Joe.
"Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it", De Blasio concluded. "Don't feel you can't afford it. Get the health care that you need when you need it". "And we're doing that here in this city". We just have to keep working at it!
He joked that if they did leave town, they should use the Trans-Hudson commuter train to get their "free health care" without worry.
