Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Wednesday, ahead of next week's confirmation hearing. Then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, an early Trump supporter during the presidential campaign, had recused himself.

Senate hearings for Mr Barr's confirmation are scheduled to begin on 15 January.

Barr's dance card included incoming Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; outgoing Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa; and Nebraska Republican Sen.

If Barr's chances for confirmation appear strong, Democrats nonetheless are expected to question him sharply about the skepticism he has voiced about the Russian Federation investigation. Barr also has criticized Mueller's office in the press. Key Senate Democrats have questioned whether he can objectively oversee Mueller's probe in light of that position and his expansive views on executive power generally. "He must also commit to resisting political pressure placed on the Justice Department".

Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel in May 2017 to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to sway the 2016 election. His interim successor, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, consulted with Justice Department officials but ultimately decided not to recuse himself. Soon after, Rosenstein named Mueller as special counsel.

End of the road for Rosenstein?

Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Russian meddling in the US presidential election, is expected to leave the Justice Department after a new attorney general is confirmed, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Rosenstein will stay on to ensure smooth transition with Barr, the official said, adding that he has seen his job as deputy as a two-year stint and is not being forced out.

CBS News reports that Mr Rosenstein will depart in the next few weeks, after Mr Barr is expected to take over.

A former USA attorney, Rosenstein expected to be fired back in September 2018 after a report surfaced that he offered to wear a wire during conversations with Trump.

Trump nominated Rosenstein to the post in 2017.

"It's being handled appropriately", Rosenstein told reporters last month. Let's hope this means Rosenstein believes that Mueller's work is largely done and can no longer be derailed.
