Vehicle with legs: Hyundai Elevate concept can walk, climb
09 January 2019, 12:17 | Austin Hogan
Image The design is modular so different cabins can be mounted on the chassis
The concept has wheels like any other vehicle, sure, but they're mounted at the end of articulated robotic legs, meaning it can both drive like a auto a walk like a living creature.
By blending electric vehicle and robotics technology, the Hyundai Elevate feels like a step toward sci-fi.
Built on a modular vehicle chassis, Elevate vehicles can swap out robotic attachments for different situations, like a auto stuck in a snow ditch climbing its way back up to the road. Elevate is an electric auto with robotic legs, which can be used both to drive and to walk.
Officially, Hyundai says this first-ever vehicle with moveable legs would be flawless for disaster relief, the legs not only providing height and ground clearance but suspension as well, making it the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV).
The auto is the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle, meant to blend technology found in robots and electric cars, allowing it to traverse terrain that even the most capable off-road vehicles are unable to navigate.
Legs can also be folded away, allowing the vehicle to drive like any other auto on the road.

German data breach affects hundreds of politicians
The data was spread via two Twitter accounts named @_0rbit and @_0rbiter, according to security researcher Luca Hammer . At least one German politician was quick to draw conclusions about the data leaks based on the nature of the breaches.
Forward-looking: Hyundai's walking vehicle concept is being marketed to first responders but its technology could go well beyond emergency situations.
In addition to unveiling its latest concept auto, Hyundai also presented its future mobility road map at CES 2019. When the terrain gets a bit bumpier, it can switch to active driving suspension or transform into a walking robot, mimicking mammalian or reptilian style gaits. This allows Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle. Walking on its legs the Elevate can step over a five-foot wall and cross a five-foot gap.
And the Japanese motoring company showed how the vehicle could be used in disaster zones to save lives. "Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete", Suh said.
If someone could not access a building without a ramp, for example, the Elevate could walk across, level itself and allow the wheelchair to enter before moving it into the entrance.
According to Suh, the Elevate has been three years in the making.
In a statement, Hyundai added: "At CES 2019, Hyundai Cradle is presenting a totally new vehicle concept that combines the power of robotics and EV technology to take people where no vehicle has been before".
