Mercedes-Benz CLA Takes Aim at Young Luxury Buyers

Mercedes-Benz managed to retain its top spot in the sales charts for luxury cars in the United States in 2018, a year that saw most brands report lower sales than the previous period. It was never as stylish as it set out to be, though, and instead of being a Mercedes that happened to be cheap, it was more like a cheap vehicle that happened to have a Mercedes badge. And it makes flawless sense that the CLA would become more distinctive, given that there is now a conventional sedan version of the A - freeing the CLA up to be lower, sleeker and sexier.

Showcased at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the second generation Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe is, according to our honest opinion, looking great.

"The latest version of Voice Control for MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience - can be experienced in the new CLA". The smoother body helps the CLA to look more expensive than it really is, and the aerodynamics have been improved. The CLA rides atop the same structure as the A-Class, but offers a swoopier look and more expressive details, such as a more aggressive front bumper and more graceful rear doors that don't end as abruptly as those on the current model.

The new CLA measures 4 688 mm long and 1 830 mm wide (increases over the original of 48 mm and 53 mm, respectively), while its height has been cut two millimetres to 1 439 mm. There will also be a manual transmission option, as well as 4Matic all-wheel drive capability for the new CLA.

The company will introduce in over 10 new products, including an array of products from the performance brand AMG, this year. Like the A-Class, the CLA will offer a bevy of active safety systems but not many of them will be standard. It is built on a re-engineered version of the previous car's platform and uses technology from the latest A-class.

USA dollar eases in Asian trade on expectations of Fed pause
The move frees up $116 billion for new lending as it tries to reduce the risk of a pronounced fall in the pace of economic growth. Yields on two-year Treasuries rose to 2.49 percent, from a trough of 2.37 percent, but were still below those on one-year paper.

Muslim youth group cleans up national parks while government remains shut down
Visitors are no longer allowed to enter Mount Rainier National Park through the main entrance until the government shutdown ends. If Shenandoah National Park takes part in the plan, the trust says it will still cover the cleaning cost of port-a-potties.

The rest of the interior is almost identical to the A-class, with a funky dashboard design, two standard 7.0-inch screens (10.3-inch units are optional), and a more playful use of materials than in other Benz models. The carmaker also claims that the system no longer gets confused by other passengers talking and only responds to the commands of the last person to say the activation phrase.

Mercedes-Benz will offer an option for the adaptive suspension system, allowing drivers the choice between comfort or a more uncompromising sporty setting.

We were impressed by the refinement, chassis, powertrain, and tech found in the new A-class, and the second-gen CLA looks to improve further on all of the A's strong points.

The new four-door coupé is due to arrive in the United Kingdom in June.
