Raptors sign former Golden State Warriors guard Patrick McCaw

Report: Cavs Could Lose 1st-Round Draft Pick for Signing and Waiving Patrick McCaw

Report: Warriors ask NBA to investigate Cavs' signing, release of Patrick McCaw

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly taking a chance on Patrick McCaw.

Now, according to Yahoo's Shams Charania, McCaw will sign a one-year contract with Toronto for the veteran's minimum of $786,000. It appears possible that the Cavs had no intention of keeping McCaw, and signed him to an offer sheet that they knew the Warriors would not match, with the intention of waiving him. After clearing the waiver wire, the third-year wing became an unrestricted free agent.

The New York Times reported that the National Basketball Association is investigating the Cavaliers for possible salary-cap circumvention, a probe that Golden State encouraged the league to undertake on the Warriors' behalf. McCaw, 23, has been the subject of some intrigue in recent weeks - a Golden State restricted free agent who signed a non-guaranteed offer sheet with Cleveland, only to be waived after three games with the Cavaliers.

The NBA is trying to find out if there was any wrongdoing when the Cavs signed McCaw to a deal in late December, when McCaw was a restricted free agent with the Golden State Warriors.

Also at 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday, multiple national reports stated that McCaw plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors.

On Sunday, the Cavs waived McCaw after three games in Cleveland ahead of a deadline that would have guaranteed his contract.

The circumstances were freakish and raised questions about Cleveland's motivation to sign and release a player off the roster of their frequent NBA Finals rival.

McCaw averaged 4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 57 games last season, his second in the National Basketball Association.
