TVP reported that Huawei's office in Poland had been searched by the AWB, along with the offices of Orange Polska where the Polish national reportedly worked.

Nonetheless, intelligence bods recommended banning the use of the kit, and official blocks are in place for state-funded projects in the US, Australia and New Zealand. The U.S. must submit an extradition hearing by the end of January.

In mid-August, Washington enacted legislation banning USA government agencies from using Huawei products amid concerns that the company's mobile phones "pose an unacceptable risk to the [Pentagon's] personnel, information and mission".

'The Chinese national is a businessman working in a major electronics company. the Pole is a person known in circles associated with cyber business, ' Maciej Wasik, the deputy head of Poland's special services, told PAP.

He said "both carried out espionage activities against Poland", but did not identify them.

It was also reported that both detainees pleaded not guilty and refused to give explanations regarding the case.

The pair are set to remain in custody for at least three months and apparently face up to ten years in prison.

Huawei has repeatedly denied claims of secret ties to the Chinese government. According to Reuters, the police had also raided the officers of Orange Polska, where the Polish national works.

A LinkedIn profile for a man named Stanislaw Wang appears to match details of the man described by Polish television.

State TV identified the Pole as Piotr D., and said he was a high-ranking employee at the Internal Security Agency until 2011, where he served as deputy director in the department of information security.

Huawei issued a statement from its Chinese headquarters saying it was aware of the situation in Poland and was looking into it.

"We have no comment for the time being. Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based", the statement said.

China's foreign ministry said it was "greatly concerned" by the reports, and urged Poland to handle the case "justly".

The Chinese national is an employee of Huawei, Poland's public TV channel TVP said.

The company added, "we have no knowledge if there is any relation of these actions to his professional duties".

The firm's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada in December over allegations of breaking of USA sanctions on Iran. USA prosecutors have accused her of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran, putting the banks at risk of violating US sanctions.
