The testimony comes after Cohen was sentenced in December to three years in prison for multiple crimes, including felony violations of campaign finance laws he undertook, prosecutors alleged, under Mr Trump's direction. He was also charged with lying to Congress about plans to build a Trump tower in Moscow in 2016.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said the committee had given the White House and the Trump Organisation until 22 January to produce documents related to the hush payments.

Cohen said in a statement he had accepted an invitation to testify from Representative Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Cohen said he will "give a full and credible account of the events that have transpired".

Cummings had pushed past year for the committee to summon Cohen to testify about his interactions with the president. Cohen earlier pleaded guilty in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe of alleged collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation to making false statements to Congress about an abandoned Trump Tower project in Moscow.

At his sentencing last month, Cohen said that he had felt a "blind loyalty" to Trump that compelled him to cover up the president's "dirty deeds", and that he was sorry to have done it.

On November 30, Cohen struck a deal to plead guilty to one count of lying to Congress in exchange for cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller.

MSNBC legal analyst Maya Wiley argued Thursday after the hearing date was announced that the testimony "is potentially even more important than the Mueller report".

"I'm not anxious about it at all", Mr Trump said of Cohen's looming testimony.

Trump has denied having the extramarital affairs. Trump has previously attacked Cohen as "a rat" and "a liar" on Twitter.

In a statement to CNN, Cohen said he agreed to testify "in furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers".

Mr Trump acted because he "was very concerned about how this would affect the election", Cohen said.

On Thursday, Cummings said he was consulting Mueller's office to ensure that he did not hinder its efforts.

In a December interview, Cummings, D-Md., said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he wanted Cohen to appear before Congress as soon as this month and signaled that he viewed it as a matter of extreme outcome.

The Oversight Committee apparently isn't the Capitol Hill body with which Cohen is eager to speak.

Cohen cooperated with Mueller's investigation after his August guilty plea, and his congressional testimony could thrust some of those still-private details he provided into the public sphere. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement.

Cohen testified before the House intelligence panel in 2017, before his role in the federal investigations was fully known and when Republicans controlled the panel.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the Intelligence Committee chairman, said in an interview last week that he was in touch with Cohen's lawyer about a possible appearance.
