Legendary former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga has passed away at the age of 49 after a short illness.

No further details have been announced regarding the circumstances of his death.

The president of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordan, said: "Sad day for South African football".

Masinga joined Swiss side St Gallen in 1996 and later moved to Italian sides Salernitana and Bari.

"I am really gutted".
