7 dead, 5 critical in Cuban bus crash

The accident happened yesterday afternoon between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo.

The victims included two Argentinean women, aged 35, a 59-year-old German woman and a 67-year-old Frenchman, according to a list published by Radio Guantánamo. The report did not specify if foreigners were among those in critical condition.

State media reported that 18 Cubans and 22 tourists from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Mexico and Canada were on board the bus when it crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo.

"Of the 40 passengers, 22 were foreigners from countries like Holland, England, France, Mexico and Canada", said Venceremos.

The bus was travelling from Baracoa to the capital, Havana, when it crashed near Guantánamo on Thursday.

Cuban highways are poorly lighted, narrow and rutted with huge potholes.

Thursday's crash is the fourth major bus accident in a month. A year ago in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 vehicle accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.
