GoFundMe launched by disabled veteran to fund Trump’s border wall surpasses $20M

U.S. Air Force Veteran Raises More than $20 Million to Build the Border Wall

GoFundMe says it is refunding more than $20 million in donations raised by veteran Brian Kolfage to build a wall along the border between the US and Mexico.

According to GoFUndMe spokesperson Bobby Whithorne, the border wall online campaign's founder promised donors that all donations would go toward building the wall along the southern border proposed by US President Donald Trump - if the campaign met its $1 billion target, cited by the Insider.

Since the goal wasn't reached, the money will be returned to donors.

Brian Kolfage, an Iraq War veteran, posted an update to his "We the People Will Build the Wall" page, writing that rather than donating the money to the federal government, it would instead be transferred to a private nonprofit he had established to construct the wall himself, according to BuzzFeedNews.

"Unanimously", Kolfage wrote, "we have all come to the conclusion that the federal government wont be able to accept our donations anytime soon".

When he gave an update, Kolfage did not say missing the goal was the reason for the refund. The campaign, titled "We The People Will Build the Wall", raised $20 million from 337,518 people in 25 days, and has been shared almost 100,000 times.

Trump says changes coming on high-tech visas
The proposed changes could result in a higher percentage of visas going to American tech companies, according to some experts. Trump and Democrats in the US Congress are at an impasse over spending legislation to fund the federal government.

GoFundMe campaigns can typically still collect money even if they do not meet their goal, but this case was different. I am honoring that commitment today. Trump has repeatedly said he will not sign any legislation to reopen the government unless it includes $5.7 billion for construction of a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, and Democrats have refused to comply with that request. You will receive your refund a few weeks after the 90 days expires and GoFundMe will notify you once your refund has processed.

Kolfage writes that members of the organization "have provided us with critical guidance on the legal, engineering, contracting, environmental, accounting, maintenance and real estate issues required to build a wall on the southern border". He also introduced a new 501 (c)(4) non-profit Florida Corporation named We Build the Wall, Inc., where donors can redirect their refunds to if they still wish for their money to be used, in one way or another, to build a wall.

Whithorne said all donors will be contacted via email about receiving their refund.

In addition, some 800,000 federal employees have been on furlough or are being forced to continue working without pay, costing the USA economy an estimated several billion dollars, Sputnik previously reported.

"However, that did not happen", Whithorne said.

Kolfage said that he has determined that the federal government is not in a place to accept the money, so he intends on having a team to build a wall privately.
