Police Officer Natalie Corona, on force only two weeks, shot dead in Davis, California

Davis, Calif., police officer dies following evening shooting; suspect found dead

Police work was her calling and Corona was the city's first hire under a recruitment program that paid her college tuition.

On Friday morning, Sacramento County Sheriff's Department crime scene investigators told KTVU that the suspect hit several vehicles including the patrol auto three times, a fire truck four times and several cars on the street.

It's hard to find a person in Arbuckle who didn't know of Natalie Corona. He had left a backpack at the crime scene with information that led the officers to his home, Pytel said.

Investigators say it appears he shot himself. Authorities have yet to released the identity of the deceased suspect.

"She just worked like you can't believe", Pytel said about Corona.

The elder Corona is a retired Colusa County sheriff's sergeant who was elected to the Board of Supervisors last November. Corona died at the hospital.

He says the family is not angry. He said as terrified bystanders ran, he saw the shooter calmly walk away before he lost sight of him in the crowd.

Jose says his daughter, 22-year-old officer Corona would commute from the family's home in Arbuckle to work patrol in Davis. Natalie Corona was shot and killed during a routine call Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019.

"She was a rising star in the department", said Pytel said.

"She died doing what she loved to do in the city she wanted to be in", said her father. Police entered the home with a robot and confirmed he was dead.

He said that when he heard the shots he instinctively ducked down.

Pascual told The Sacramento Bee that the gunman fired so closely to his right ear that he couldn't hear properly the morning after the Thursday night shooting.

No one had been arrested in the shooting, and it is not known what led to the killing, Raymond said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Natalie Corona.

"When I looked up and I saw the officer on the ground he was already walking due west toward C Street, like just shooting at what looked like random people to me", Pascual said, adding that he knew then he had to flee. "Everybody who met her liked her".

Officials announced early Friday he had been found dead inside.

Corona's colleagues, family and friends mourned a vibrant life that was cut short.

A possible motive for the shooting is also unclear. "The officer sustained a bullet wound and was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center".

The Solano County Sheriff's Office, for example, arrived en masse to downtown Davis to support the search for the gunman, Deputy Daniel "Cully" Pratt reports. The 22-year-old finished her field training around Christmas time, Pytel says, before she went out on her own just weeks prior to her death. He has not been identified.

Of the deaths, 52 were firearms-related, 32 were officers killed in crashes, five officers were ambushed, and four officers were shot and killed conducting traffic stops.

A police officer who had been on the job only a few weeks was shot and killed by a suspect who opened fire as she was investigating a three-car crash, authorities in Northern California said.

The shooting happened on a street lined with mature trees and bordered by churches on both sides.
