Flu cases spike in Oneida County with the new year

Canada’s flu season likely peaked in December, report suggests, but total cases remain high

Only Winnipeg region has had more flu cases than Northern Manitoba this season

Southern Saskatchewan is seeing an outbreak of H1N1, with this season's flu strain proving deadly. Photocopier buttons are rarely wiped down and usually a hotbed mashup of several types of germs that can make you ill.

Although health care officials can't be certain until after the flu season, it appears that this year's vaccine was fairly effective.

Officials say this accounts for 2,920,000 - 3,510,00 medical visits to date and 69,300 - 83,500 hospitalizations.

The department in its weekly influenza report Friday for the week ending January 5 says three of the people who died were over 65 and one was between ages 50 and 64. About 60 million Americans came down with flu, as many as 400,000 were hospitalized, and up to 18,000 died, the CDC reported.

Laurentiu Givelichian, the head of pediatrics for the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Health Authority, said that in his province the flu isn't just affecting more kids than usual - it's making them sicker, too.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most illnesses nationally this season are being caused by a flu strain that leads to fewer hospitalizations and deaths compared to the kind of flu that dominated a year ago.

Chances are you probably know someone who is sick, but doctors and pharmacists say vaccines can be given even to those who already feel sick or are coughing.

Almost all of the confirmed cases of influenza in Manitoba since September 1 have been influenza A, which typically is worse than flu cause by influenza B strains, though the disease from those can also be severe.

Flu vaccines are offered at many doctor's offices, clinics, local health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers and some schools.

Six people have died from the flu in Saskatchewan so far, with three of those victims being children less than six years old.

She said the warning is especially important for parents of children under the age of five. "The system continuously evaluates the predictive power of each independent method and recalibrates how this information should be used to produce improved flu estimates", says Santillana.

The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, though there is still time to get vaccinated.
