Oakland A's trying to convince Kyler Murray to pick baseball over football before NFL Draft deadline, reports say

Report: Oakland A's to Meet With Kyler Murray to Discuss Entering NFL Draft

9 overall pick by the Oakland A's in 2018, but all indications point to Murray favoring football. Teams are usually barred from giving major league contracts to recently drafted players, as it could be seen as a loophole to MLB's draft bonus pool system.

The Oakland Athletics - led by president Billy Beane - are meeting with Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray in hopes of persuading him to forego the National Football League and play professional baseball, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

According to multiple reports, Murray is asking for a significant increase in guaranteed money from Oakland - as he should, given he has incredible leverage right now - although the number is in flux.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's are working on "creative" ways to get Murray to choose baseball over football.

If Murray were to accept a major league contract, the Athletics would have to put him on the 40-man roster. The A's reportedly are expecting Murray to enter the draft, hence the meeting.

So while Murray's signing bonuses in both sports could be similar, the risk/reward for his future earning potential surely will factor into his decision.

As Passan explains in follow-up tweet, league rules prevent a team from signing a drafted player to an MLB contract straight out of the draft. Murray would have four options, meaning he would need to join the A's full-time at latest by the 2022 season, though Oakland intends to aggressively promote Murray.

The A's gave Murray a $4.66 million signing bonus past year after choosing him with the ninth pick in the draft despite the center fielder's limited baseball experience. The A's last week said they expected Murray to declare for the NFL Draft by Monday's deadline.
